For a few minutes,
thanks to technology,
my Hawaii-living-brother
was hanging out on the patio with Dad and me.
For just a few minutes.
We were enjoying a beautiful day.
We were on the deck.
under the magnolia tree that grows
outside my brother's childhood window.
It is in this place, under this tree,
that I feel,
more than in any other place,
connected to my roots.
To the family that,
for better or worse,
shaped the deepest parts of my being.
