Old and New

Cracked, weathered stone,
Panes of thick glass,

rusty old bars,
years of salty sea air

pieces of the old
of history
standing in one spot for more than one hundred and fifty years
as generations have come and gone

waiting for visitors
and lighting the way.

Our visit to historic Newport, RI was the highlight of my week and I fell in love with this little ol' light house.

I "needed" a weekend away - last week seemed laced with irritation and loaded with frustration. Those normal dealings with mundane bureaucracies and sales people and botched deliveries - it was just one of those weeks. It seemed that every time I "surrendered" and "accepted" I turned around and there was another mistake that resulted in hours of lost time. I felt like I would just scream if I heard one more employee of some huge company or other tell me how "sorry" they were for my troubles. On Thursday I stopped at a favorite local gas station for a car inspection - figuring that the way things were going, they'd probably find five or so reasons not to pass my car. But I was in and out, with a new head light and a new sticker in about ten minutes! Thought maybe my luck was changing!

After a wonderful weekend escape, I returned home to a successful refrigerator delivery...so now my kitchen appliance "coup" is complete and successful! History put up a good fight last week - trying hard NOT to leave our house. The appliances weren't 150 years old - but they'd served several families for at least twenty-five years...they really didn't want to be replaced by newer models.

As for me, I think I'm going to stick with enjoying the old, and not try to make anything new again for quite a while!
