One

Years ago Three Dog Night sang,
"One is the loneliest number..."

I'm not so sure about that.
I don't mind being alone...not at all.
A little one on one with myself?
That works for me.

I do, however, hate it when I feel alone in the middle of a group.
Childhood flashbacks occur.
It's not pretty.

So, I guess lonely is more about a state of mind
than a number.
Even if that number is one.

  1. I couldn't agree more. I love being alone, and find it restorative. I love being with people...the right people...and never in huge groups. Crowds can be very lonely. You nailed it!

  3. So true. I especially love your second shot that captures feeling alone even though you are in a group so well.

  4. So true, Adrienne! My mom always said that she was happy with her own company!

  5. I know, I was torn, I am not against being alone, if that is what I want. But feeling alone when with others - oy not good.

    Gorgeous shots!

  6. I got so used to traveling alone before babies that now I really miss it. Dinners, movies, site seeing... Did it all solo and it's kind of freeing to go as you please.

  8. Exactly. i rather like being by myself which is far different than being alone - feeling 'lonely'. Beautiful image and excellent insight to the concept of being 'one'.

  9. Isn't it odd that just when I feel like I'm the only one who can feel alone in a group, I find I share the experience with so many others. Onesies Unite! Or, since I really am dyslexic, Onesies Untie!

  10. You said this so eloquently. Being alone is wonderful and I need that time. But feeling alone is sad. You have great images to illustrate your point, too!

  16. I love your interpretation with the swan amidst the other ducks. I do at times feel more alone in a crowd then when I am all by myself!

  18. Well, you sure get it ... oneness can be a good thing, it can be a sad thing or it can have no meaning at all depending on your life experience. I certainly understand the feeling of loneliness in a crowd ... not at all a pleasand feeling. Your pictures fit your words perfectly. This is an excellent post.

  20. Perfect photos to accompany your thoughts. I kinda like my own company...I never use to be like that. It's an acquired preference I've gained the older I get. Thanks for linking up to Song-ography.

  21. Such great pictures. I agree. Loneliness is more a state of mind than the number of people that surround us.

  22. There is a difference between being alone and being lonely. I don't mind choosing to be alone; I am fine with that. Being alone, or lonely, not by my choosing is very sad.

  23. Oh I've been in such a group where I've felt very alone.
What great shots here. The lone swan with all the other birds is fabulous.
