Imagine..

What is it about an abandoned property that is so enticing?

This spring I was wandering trough an old estate property that is now a state park about an hour north of me in Newburyport, MA. I stumbled upon this old, brick entrance that, I imagine, was gated at one point. What would it have looked like? Wrought iron? Left mostly open or closed? Used to keep children inside, or strangers out? I imagine a strong pair of hands putting up the now well worn fence. I picture gardening...a tender pruning of the bushes now growing wildly across the yard. And I hear children. The laughter and carefree banter of playing children.

As I wander with my camera, all sorts of stories float in and out of my consciousness. I meander through my thoughts of what this property has meant to others for, perhaps, generations....and then wonder what I would do with the place if I were ever to occupy this little slice of heaven. I'd sure keep lots of these beautiful orange blooms around to brighten the landscape. Orange could quickly be catching up with yellow for a shot at becoming my favorite color... But I digress.

This combination of a long walk out of doors and a mini mental vacation are, to me, the perfect recipe for a refreshing afternoon!

  1. We must be rather close to each other as Newburyport is just about an hour north of me as well. I live in Nahant, which is on the north shore of Boston. Perhaps I already knew that we lived near each other....I have the absolute worst memory for that kind of stuff. It's always fun to go to Newburyport. Were you at Maudsley State Park? If you haven't been there you should go...it's beautiful

  4. I agree on every count, what a refreshing and thought filled afternoon it must have been. I do believe it was very magical when all was spruced up and trimmed, it's almost there now. Very pretty view.

  6. So pretty! I love abandoned properties because of the story I can imagine of when it was alive. There is an old house on the corner of an intersection here in town that basically is all overgrown with grass, weeds, and vines. Each time we pass, I try to envision what it must have been like inhabited. Surely there are many stories to be told.
