oh, those woods....

"I took a walk in the woods
and came out taller than the trees."
Henry David Thoreau

 {Middlesex Fells Reservation}

Fresh air, blue skies, green trees and glistening water...
walking through the tall trees
treading softly over the fallen pine needles
climbing up
exploring off the beaten path
the good elements of a summer weekend hike

One of my favorite things about wandering through the woods
is watching what catches the sunlight...
These bright green pine needles against the green water
was a favorite sight from yesterday.

And, just to keep us on our toes,
Mother Nature is reminding us that time keeps marching on.
There were a few random hints of autumn that caught our attention.

Of course,
it must be said,
that what keeps these hikes fun
is my husband.
He knows how to keep us moving
and keep the mood light...
even when the old knees and feet start wishing that the way back
could {miraculously} be shorter than the way out!

  1. I agree with Tamar - that first shot is so inviting and the perspective makes those trees both imposing and yet so embracing. Love your hikes.

  5. What a great thing for you to do together! I really like that downed tree in the last photo. (You probably help him see nature in a new way too...I bet you inspire him as much as he you.)

  6. These are so lovely and I see a sprig or two of fall color in some of those trees. Love that you get to enjoy the outdoors on the weekend!

  7. What a lovely quote and beautiful photographs... sometimes I try to imagine what it would be like to retreat to the woods, to a magnificent Walden Pond, to be solitary for a while. The quote and your posts always give me some insight :)
