Today

I climbed a mountain.
Oh, not an I've-been-up-north-or-out-west kinda mountain.
Just a big-rock-behind-my-pond kinda mountain.
However, and in my defense,
on my map of walking paths it's called
Mt. Towanda.
So, I'm counting it.
As a mountain.
Today, I climbed a mountain!

The way up was shaded, paved and lovely.
The way I chose to descend...not so much!
The whole area was quiet.
There were so few people on these paths,
that, in my mind, it was all mine!

At the top I saw this.

You know how happy this made me!!
I knew it was going to be there.
Others have shared photos.
But this one is mine!
Because I climbed the mountain!

This is the view from the other side.
A view of "my" pond.

When I woke up this morning, I didn't know I was going to do this.
The idea came to me when I was listening to the words of
"Proud" by Heather Small

"i look in to the window of my mind
reflections of the fears i know i've left behind
i step out of the ordinary
i can feel my soul ascending
i'm on my way
can't stop me now
and you can do the same
what have you done today to make you feel proud?
it's never too late to try
what have you done today to make you feel proud?"

It was a perfect day to discover a new trail.
To push myself out of my comfort zone.
(you know, that chasing swans comfort zone)
Truth be told,
I am a little proud of myself.
And sore.
Tomorrow should be wonderful (cough, cough!)

This lovely shade tree at the top was one of my surprise discoveries of the day.
You better believe I rested under it for a little bit.
There was a wonderful breeze begging to be enjoyed.
And, in case any of you are worried that I might have taken too much of a risk
mountain climbing on my own...

...that's "Mt. Towanda" across the pond.
Yes, that little bump with the power lines on top of it.
Hush.
I'm counting it.
Today, I climbed a mountain!

  3. Terrific - not all of us climbed a mountain today - but we sure enjoyed your climb. The photos are stunning. No matter the size - a mountain is a mountain - and there to be climbed and enjoyed. After my emergency back surgery it was a year before I could go hiking again - but one day we climbed a mountain - smaller than yours, but it sure did look big when we started up - but at the top we had the most spectacular view of Mt. Baker - which is 10,700 feet tall - now THAT's a mountain - but I shall never attempt it - I am happy with my little mountain with a big view. The round trip was 1.6 miles - I was very proud of myself - it was my longest hike up to that date - after my back surgery.
